extreme makeover: turtle edition

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Do you guys remember Bling and Scooter? They’re my turtle friends, and clearly I do not write about them enough. The three of us just got finished with a late-night fire alarm, which is not really something you want to wake up to. But we met some firefighters and some cats, and Bling made googly eyes at a nice young lady — because he’s so suave, you know. Do you remember that? Of course you do. He’s such a player.

In fact, some of you may even remember when these young men were little baby turtles. But for those of you who don’t, here’s a quick reminder:

Awww! They were so tiny!

Of course, being small meant they didn’t need much room for swimming around. And I didn’t have much room for an aquarium. But with them at almost 4 and 3 years old, things were getting a little cramped:

Let me tell you, Bling and Scooter were not very happy about this. (Especially Bling, who (contrary to popular belief) wanted occasional privacy with the ladies he brought home.) So I finally gave in and got them a new home — one that’s five times the size of their previous digs:

Here’s a picture that shows the magnitude of the new aquarium compared with everything else in my living room:

Wow, huh?

And they seem to enjoy having more room. Whereas they used to spend a lot of time just hanging out on the gravel, they now actually swim a ton. Plus the wood thingy I bought (and sawed in half) for them to bask on appears to be a trendy spot:

OK, that’s almost too much about Bling and Scooter. But before I go to sleep, a short film:
